On the third anniversary of her younger brother Benjamin Keough’s death, Riley shared a deeply moving tribute to two people she continues to carry in her heart: her brother Benjamin and her mother, Lisa Marie Presley.
Taking to Instagram, the actress posted a previously unseen photograph of the mother and son together. There were no lengthy explanations, no carefully crafted speeches — only three simple words: “Missing you both,” followed by a heart. Yet in their simplicity, those words seemed to express a lifetime of grief, love and longing.
Benjamin Keough died on July 12, 2020, at just 27 years old. His death by suicide devastated the Presley family, and perhaps no one felt the loss more deeply than his mother.
At the time, a representative described Lisa Marie as “completely heartbroken” and “beyond devastated,” while also trying to remain strong for her daughters. Benjamin, the spokesperson said, had been the love of her life.
For Lisa Marie, the grief of losing her only son became an enduring part of her final years. She would later write openly about the overwhelming pain of bereavement and the difficult journey of learning how to live alongside it.
Then, less than three years after Benjamin’s death, the Presley family was struck by another devastating loss.
Lisa Marie Presley, the only child of Elvis and Priscilla Presley, died on January 12, 2023, at the age of 54. Months later, the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner determined that her death was caused by complications from a small bowel obstruction related to scar tissue that had developed following previous bariatric surgery.
For Riley, it meant losing both her brother and her mother within an unbearably short period of time.
Yet even amid grief and complicated family matters surrounding Lisa Marie’s estate, the Presleys have continued to come together for the younger generation.
Priscilla Presley later shared a touching family photograph alongside Riley and Lisa Marie’s twin daughters, Harper and Finley, celebrating the girls’ graduation and their next chapter in life.
It was a rare image of togetherness after years marked by heartbreak.
And perhaps that is what made Riley’s simple tribute so powerful. Beneath one of the most famous family names in American music history are people mourning the same way so many families do — holding tightly to photographs, memories and love.
